3 Do-It-Yourself Basic Natural Hair Care Hacks for Beginners

Natural hair tangles and breaks easily, demanding extra care than relaxed or textured hair. That is no reason however, to get you scared as someone who is in the transitioning process. Taking care of your natural hair should be fun, easy and you should have it under control at the comfort of your home with these 3 proven hacks:-

1. Spray your hair with water at least twice a day

This cannot be over-emphasized. You need to make water your hair’s best pal. Water moisturizes your hair and makes it easier to handle and style. Use a spray bottle to spritz water on your hair in the morning as your style it for the day and before bed (not so much to wet your pillow though). You can get creative and put some product in the water which could be some oil, leave-in treatment, aloe vera drops or any other product of your choice.

A good recommendation as you start off is glycerin. Pour a little amount in your spray bottle and mix well with water before spraying on your hair. Glycerin works as a good conditioner. However, be careful not to use too much of it because it may get sticky on your hair and you do not want that.

2. Purchase and use natural hair products on your natural hair

There are very many natural hair products in the market. However, to start you off, you need a shampoo, a conditioner and oil or hair butter. Wash your hair with shampoo once in a while, a conditioner will help detangle your hair while oil or hair butter will seal in moisture into your hair so that it does not dry out and get damaged.

On this note, you might want to get yourself a wide-toothed comb. Well, this might not qualify as a “hair product” but remember to purchase one as you do the rest of the products. A wide-toothed comb ensures that you do not break your hair as you comb it. Most people actually prefer to finger-comb just to minimize breakage.

3. Always wrap your hair before bed to protect your strands

Wrapping your hair ensures moisture retention, protects the hair ends and prevents your hair from tangling. Hair ends are better protected so as not to break because they are the oldest hence weakest part of your hair. The ends also tangle easily while you turn over the pillow at night. For these reasons, hair is best covered as we sleep.

It is also advisable to tack in your hair ends by simply dividing the hair into 3 parts and using bands to tack in the ends. That is just one quick way, there are many more ways to put your ends away.

For wrapping your hair, a simple satin or silk scarf should do the job, because these 2 materials do not absorb hair moisture and oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. You will definitely thank yourself in the morning when you wake up to moisturized hair, free from tangling.

Try these simple hacks and you will discover that keeping natural hair is not as bad as you thought, its actually fun. Good luck on your natural hair journey!
