6 Fixes For Summer-Ready Skin

Summer’s almost here and you know what that means! You might be hitting the gym or skipping calories to make sure you have your body summer ready, but what about your skin? Is thinking about skin issues like spider veins, acne, bumpy rashes, skin discoloration, scars, etc. giving you anxiety?

Don’t worry, there’s plenty of time and ways to get rid of all of them, and you’ll be ready for all those cute short skirts and tank tops in no time! Read on to find out dermatologist-recommended remedies for 6 common skin issues people face, especially in the summer.

1. Skin Discoloration

Many of us have experienced the browning or reddening of certain areas of our bodies, specifically around the neck, chest, and arms, that look out of place with the rest of our skin tone. This is more prominent in those that sunbathe often as the skin in these areas are thinner and therefore more prone to sun damage. Aging, alcohol consumption, and smoking could also worsen the effects of it.

It’s always better to get checked out for skin cancer, but once you’re all cleared of the Big-C, you might be looking at ways to get rid of it. Skin whitening creams are one of the most popular options out there, but they do not work, and have been found to be harming to your skin.

Instead, Washington-based dermatologist Dr. Elliot suggests non-invasive laser skin treatments, which make use of LED devices and factional lasers to get rid of damaged skin cells caused by melanin overproduction. This will help get rid of discolored skin pigmentation, freckles, redness, spots, etc. Following this, you’ll want to keep your skin protected with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, something with SPF 30 or more, to cover exposed skin to prevent further sun damage.

2. Back Acne

If you’re dreading the sun bringing with it a recurring issue with back acne or “backne”, you’re not alone! Dr. Jeffrey Weinberg, Director of Clinical Research at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, in New York says that adult acne is a very common problem, although sadly not commonly dealt with properly.

Dr. Weinberg stresses that the key to getting rid of it is prevention, and knowing what type of acne (genetic, diet, sweat, or food allergy) it is is also important. Over-the-counter medicines can be cheap but ineffective, so the best way to solve your problem is to consult a dermatologist who will be able to analyze your unique situation and prescribe a single, effective course of treatment which will keep you safe from future acne and scarring. These may include antibiotic pills, Sotrel, Azelaic acid cream, Alpha-hydroxy acids, or Benzoyl peroxide topical treatments.
