6 Wrong Ways of Washing Your Hair

Do you know the real reason why your hair not only feels good but looks so darn good after a trip to the salon? It’s because the pros understand that the key to happy hair is a well-executed shampoo. You read that right. The truth is that there are wrong ways of washing your hair which can turn those beautify strands from being shiny and silky to total disaster and mess.

But luckily it’s never too late to start stepping up your hair-care and shampoo game. We turned to the pros to get the scoop on the most common mistakes and how to avoid them. Starting with……

1. Washing too Often

This is something that most don’t know. Pros will tell it’s not necessary to wash your hair nearly as often as you might think. Most young women today wash their hair way too much! For the majority of hair types, washing three times a week does the job. How is that possible? Your hair actually produces more oil when washed too frequently. Who would have guessed that?

2. Shower in Piping-Hot Water

Relaxing as a long steamy shower might appear, when you expose your hair strands to temperatures that are super-high will leaves them looking lifeless and dry. While we cannot pinpoint an ideal temp for everybody, you will get better results when you keep on keep it on the moderate or cooler side. This helps in locking in the moisture, something that is beneficial in the long-run.

3. Scrubbing your Scalp

The health of your literally begins at the scalp and that is why being extra-gentle as you wash the hair roots is critical. Don’t massage your scalp too harshly or use your nails, use minimal pressure. Two rounds of (gentle, non-abrasive) shampooing usually does the trick perfectly when it comes to cleaning your scalp. The first is purely to remove build-up.

4. Shampoo not Suitable

Similar to standard skin care, it all comes to identifying your unique hair type and then going for a formulation that best meets your needs. If you’ve got oily hair, consider using a gentle purifying shampoo and avoid overly- moisturizing or hydrating. Using a moisture-rich shampoo makes your hair more manageable.

5. Not Patient with your Conditioner

Patience has been said to be a virtue—especially when it comes to conditioning. Unlike shampoo, it’s not about a quick massage and rinse. You should start applying conditioner, mid-shaft downward towards the ends and never condition at the root. While the conditioning product is still in your hair, consider using a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair. You may want to leave your choice conditioner in and then wrap the hair in a towel for between 5 to 7 minutes. Nailing that timing is the tricky part, any longer than that will leave residue in your hair.

6. Too Harsh on Post-Shower Strands

You may be done with the shower, but the job isn’t over yet. How you treat your hair after the shower is pivotal to its appearance and overall health. After you towel-dry, it’s always good to put some sort of protectant in, especially if you plan on using a hot tool. Remember, when using a hot tool, never do so when your hair is damp. Hair needs to be fully dry before applying such heat.

Believe it or not, the bottom-line is that a good hair day typically begins in the morning; in the shower. If you are going to the salon, it all begins with how the pros clean your hair. It from there that all else will develop depending on your unique hair and your beauty goals.
