Four Ways to Prevent Oil Buildup During Summer and Enjoy Clear Skin

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you may experience excessive oil buildup and breakouts during the summertime heat. Don’t worry though. You can take control over your skin with these four tips from dermatologists and enjoy a clear complexion this summer.

Find the Right Face Wash

Many facial cleansers claim to prevent acne by ridding your skin of excess oil, but many fall short of their promises. The key to finding the right cleanser is to first know your skin type. For example, if you tend to get oily in your t-zone only, you may have combination skin whereas oily skin types are more likely to experience oil all over their face. Once you know your skin type, look for a product designed for it specifically. You should pay close attention to the ingredients and avoid cleansers with fragrance and detergents, which can make your skin woes worse.

Moisturize

If your skin lacks proper moisturization levels, it can produce excessive amounts of oil in an attempt to correct the problem. You should use a daily moisturizer infused with SPF 30 or higher for the best protection against the sun. In addition to this, your moisturizer should be free from oil and fragrance to prevent skin irritation.

Exfoliate

Most dermatologists recommend exfoliating no more than three times a week. Use a gentle scrub that contains acne-fighting ingredients such as activated charcoal, tea tree oil or salicylic acid for the best results. Make sure to use warm water on your face prior to exfoliating to ensure that your pores are open. This will improve your product’s ability to penetrate sebum found deep in your pores and eliminate breakouts before they occur.

Avoid Foundation

Foundation, heavy concealer and other makeup products clog your pores, resulting in increased oil buildup and ultimately, breakouts. Avoid heavy makeup at all costs. Instead, try oil blotting wipes to keep your face free of shine.

Oily skin and breakouts can take a toll on your self-confidence, but can be corrected with the right know-how. Follow these tips this summer to achieve clear, healthy skin once and for all.
